One of the main tasks of the Forest Conservators who manage the area is to prevent trees from taking over the heathland. Without this management, the heathland would disappear very quickly, and with it much of the Forest’s wildlife, interest and, of course, views. Grazing by livestock, traditionally an important economic activity in the Forest, is a very effective long-term method of controlling tree growth.
In the grazed area of the Forest, please keep your dog under close control: remember that land managers have the right to shoot any dogs found molesting livestock.
Please comply with the 40mph signs on Forest roads and slow down for animals and people.
Picnic where you choose, but please take all of your litter home with you.
Please protect the Forest from fire. Barbecues are not permitted.
