Madam Butterfly at Assembly Hall Theatre

Thu 21 Sep, 7.30pm

After sold-out performances of Madama Butterfly and Carmen last year, Russian State Opera is back to delight you with exquisite production, its beautiful set, and costumes which intensifies the emotion in a heart-breaking story.

Set in Japan at the turn of the century, it is the story of a doomed love affair between an American naval officer and his young Japanese bride whose self-sacrifice and defiance of her family leads to tragedy.

Sad and tragic it most certainly is, yet the compelling tale of Madama Butterfly remained Puccini’s favourite opera – his supreme theatrical achievements also gave the world its most sublime and beautiful arias in history – One Fine Day and Love Duet, as well as the Humming Chorus which has been popular with opera-goers for over a century.
This touching tale of innocent love crushed between two utterly different cultures resonates as strongly as ever in today’s world.

A talk by Aaron Bertelsen at Gravetye Manor

Wednesday 11th October

“I believe that cooking, like gardening, is an activity best done with other people, and there is nothing better than a leisurely afternoon in the kitchen making jam or chutney with a good friend. It is a celebration of everything the garden has given us.” Join us as Aaron shares his joy of growing fruit and vegetables in the kitchen garden at Great Dixter, the historic house and garden located on the borders of Kent and Sussex. Christopher Lloyd, the revered gardener and writer who grew up in the house, believed the best way to celebrate home-grown seasonal produce, was with honest, simple cooking. Signed copies of the book will be available to purchase.
Gathering at 10.30am for the talk, followed by lunch at 12.00 noon.

Train Trek Appeal on Bluebell Railway

This years Train Trek takes place on 18th November and aims to raise £15,000 to buy one replacement 60 foot panel for the track.
The Track Trek starts from East Grinstead between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. with registration and safety briefings at East Grinstead from 8:30 a.m. Parking here will be in any of the town’s Pay and Display car parks.  Alternatively, you can park your car for free at Sheffield Park station in order to catch a complimentary bus to East Grinstead in time to start from there before 10 a.m. Registration and safety briefings at Sheffield Park will take place between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. before the bus ride to East Grinstead. For trekkers starting at East Grinstead, a complimentary bus service will operate to take you back to your original starting point from Sheffield Park.
The Trek will be along the entire length of the line between East Grinstead and Sheffield Park stations, covering a distance of 11 miles. With trains running most weekends and daily until the end of October, there are not many opportunities to walk the entire length of the Railway, and at the same time raise lots of money through sponsorship for this very important appeal.
This is a chance not only for supporters to see the track from a different perspective, including the tunnel but also to see first-hand the track renewal works taking place during the middle part of November between Horsted Keynes and Sheffield Park.
