Freddy Kempf at Assemly Hall Theatre

Sunday 7th October

KHACHATURIAN – Masquerade Suite
TCHAIKOVSKY – Piano concerto No1
TCHAIKOVSKY – Symphony No6 (Pathetique)
Soloist: Freddy Kempf (piano)
Conductor: Roderick Dunk

We open our 2018-2019 season with an all Russian programme of well known and popular works. Our first concert starts with Aram Khachaturian’s Masquerade Suite – a selection by the composer from incidental music he wrote for a play of the same name. The Waltz from the Suite is justly famous, and Khachaturian worked hard at it to find, as he said, a theme which was both “beautiful and new”.

Freddy Kempf, our piano soloist, has performed a number of times in Tunbridge Wells and we are delighted to have him back to play Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No 1. The grand opening of this work is one of the most recognisable of all concertos and, despite criticism from the Russian music establishment when it first appeared, it quickly became very popular and is today one of the most performed of all piano concertos.

We end with Tchaikovsky’s last symphony, his deeply moving Symphony No 6, the Pathétique, whose premiere took place just days before his death.
